OK!

When you have your icon done as you would like, with timing and everything look at the box your finished one is in. At the bottom there is a little tab that says "Optimized."

Once you click that look at the boxes on the right side of your screen. Lossy will lower the overall quality of your avatar image, but will give a corresponding drop in size. Lowering the number of colors is also a good idea. I usually play around with the settings in that box until I find a balance of looking good and size.

248k is incredibly huge though as a starting point. Can you identify what may be making it so big? A good rule of thumb is no more than 8 frames for a color gif.

Let me know if you have more questions! :)

OH! and when you have what you want, ALWAYS choose "save optimized as..." out of the file menu or all your hard work will be for naught

Thank you, I shall experiment.

Yeah, the 248k was because I was messing around with multiple frames and trying to do an interesting blurred transition between frames. I tried 'tweening', but the fade from one into the other always reveals the checkerboard background, and I don't know how to fix that.

Whee! It works! I tried your suggestion, and I also found that 'optimize to file size' is a handy trick. Oboyobobyoboy... I'm going to go mad now, creating icons for [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_spike. Yay! I shall have to give you credit too, o wise guru of IR. You should post tutorials (because I know that you're absolutely not busy with anything else in your life *g*).

Lookee!!

Next task will be to figure out how to tint the visor glow only.

Now I just have to work on those creativity skills...
