Why?! For the love of God, why is this effect popular?

Ok, much respect to people who make icons. Even more respect to people who go through the trouble of making tutorials...

But seriously, why is this effect so DAMN popular?

It's freaky! Looking at icons like this just give me the willies, something looks so wrong with them.

can someone please explain to me why this appeals to them?

The Alexis one doesn't look that bad, but the Eliza one looks a bit weird. I didn't even recognize her.

It's like icon plastic surgery! Yay. /sarcasm

I'm sure it's just a trend, and so surely, by definition, it will go away.

That's just the way some people like them. I've been using this tutorial recently myself but not the point where I sharpen the lips and eyes that much. Just enough to make them more noticeable.

When I first saw icons that used that tutorial I thought the skin looked a tad...china dollish. That's the best way I can put it but I like the effect used to smooth the skin more. It's definitely helped me out in a couple of icons.

That's the exact question I've been asking myself. Seriously fucked up. Subtlety is apparently not something these people have heard of.
